Another broken leg

I suffered a broken leg again. I was rushed into the imfirmory. Dr. Stanpole and the wrestling coach helped me. After every thing was done Gene opened the window and started to talk to me. I was very mad. "You want to break something else in me! Is that why your here" (176)? I was so mad with him. I fell out of my bed and he did not even come into my room to help me back in my bed. Gene came back the next mourning and gave me a suitcase full of stuff that I needed. I told Gene that I wrote to alot of different military academies to try and get in but they all rejected me because of my leg. I told Gene that I always believed in the war but I said i did not because I could not be a part of it. " I was going to keep on saying that I do not believe in the war until two seconds after i got a letter from Ottowa or ..." (182). I really did belive in the war but I was really mad that I could not be apart of it, so I said that I did not blieve in it. I bursted into tears and said you did not mean to knock me out of the tree, it was an accident right? "Then that was it, it was just a blind impulse, I think I can believe that... "(183). Gene had to leave because Dr. Stanpole was going to set the bone in my leg in place again. So gene could come back into my room later that day.

Gene came home from Leper's house and I was in the middle of a snow ball fight and Gene decided to join in the snow ball fight also. Gene aked me if I was able to play in the snow ball fight and I told him I thought my bones were getting stronger. After the snow ball fight we went into our room and Brinker came in and Gene told Brinker that Leper escaped from the army because he is crazy. Brinker then says the two people in their class can not go to the war. Gene then said that there is no war. Gene read me something about Caesar. I do not believe in Caesar but i do believe in the war now because it made Leper go crazy. What ever makes some one crazy has to be real. "Sure. There isnt any war" (150). Finny now believes that there is no war. That night Brinker came into our room and took me and Gene into the assembly hall. He told us he gathered judges and an audience to decide what really happened about me accident. "Brinker and three coherts came into our room with much commotion at 10:05 p.m." (156). I told every body that I fell out of the tree and it was an accident. Then I remembered that Gene was with me and not on the ground next to the tree because we were going to do a double jump. Gene and I had to go find Leper and we brought him for his testomony. Leper wil not say anything because he does not want to discrimanate himself. I stood up and I ran out of the hall crying and I fell down the marble staircase. "I just dont care, never mind" (168)! No body probably had ever seen me cry before but I did not care i just did not want to talk about it.

Section Eight Discharge

Gene set out to go to Leper's town in Vermont. He told me everything that happened when he went there. He said he took a train and then a bus to get to Leper's house. He told me that he would not let himself think that Leper just deserted the army. "You dont "escape" from the army, so he must have escaped from something else" (131). He would never think that Leper would just leave the army so Gene started to think of other things Leper could have escaped from. When Gene arrived at Leper's house, Leper forced him into the dining room so no one would know that Gene was here. Gene told me that Leper said he did escape from the army. Leper said that he escaped because the army was going to give him a Section Eight Discharge for insanity. "they were going to give me a discharge, a Section Eight Discharge" (136). Leper did not want to get a Section Eight Discharge because that means he will probably not be able to get a job after the war, because no body would want to hire a crazy person. After that Gene and Leper got into a fight and Leper accused Gene of pushing me out of the tree on purpose. Leper's mom comes in and then stops the fight. Then they all have dinner together. After that Leper and Gene go for a walk and Leper tells Gene that is seeing strange hallucations at training camp. "the idea pf his face on a woman's body. That's what made me psycho..." (140). Leper would imagine very starnge images and that is why he got a Section Eight discharge. Gene told me eventually Leper told him so many gross and strange things that Leper images, Gene just ran away into the snowy fields. Who could blame him, Leper is really a messed up kid.

One day Gene and I were doing more training for the Olympics. Leper decided that he wanted to enlist in the army to go to the war. That made Gene think that the war is even more unreal to him. Me and Gene stop going to the Butt room because Brinker started telling means jokes about Leper and we did not want to be apart of that. "... since little else was talked about in the Butt Room he sooned stopped going there and stopped me from going as well..." (119). Eventually we stopped hanging out with our other friends which I think is a good thing because now we have alot of time to train for the Olympics. The next day I decided to have a winter carnival. I told every one what to do. Brinker is in charge of bringing the stuff from there dormitory to the carnival. Brinkers roommate Brownie Perkins is in charge of guarding hard cider in the snow. We arranged jumps and other things to do in the snow. Chet Douglass plays music with his trumpet. "The Winter Carnival. The Devon Winter Carnival" (121). That is the carnival that I am going to host and it will be the best carnival ever. I did a strange dance on the prize table with his good leg. Every body had way to much cider and was out of control. Later that day a telegram from Leper comes and it is for Gene. I took the letter, I was completely shocked when I read it. The letter said "I have escaped and need help. I am at Christmas Location. You understand. No need to risk address here. My safety depends on you coming at once..." (129). Leper is gone and Gene has to find him and I can not believe that Leper escaped.

The Olympics

I woke up one mourning and Gene and I started talking. I was only kidding but I was making fun of Gene's clothes and the lack of maid service in this room. "You don't have to advise like that, we all know you're the worst dressed man in the class" (95). I was telling Gene that he was the worst dressed man in our class but I was only joking around. The Brinker cam into our room and he said to Gene if he was ready to enilst in the army with him. I was very depressed about that because I was not able to enlist because I was no longer able to run because of my leg. Gene decided to say no, he was not going to enlist at all. I was so happy. We began making jokes and I came up with a nick name for Brinker. His nick name was Yellow Peril. I am not really sure why I chose that for him, it just looked liked it fit him as a good nick name. Me and Gene were going to our first class and I told him that winter loves me. He said how did I know that winter loved me. I said because I love winter so it must return the affection. "... I love winter, and when you really love something, then it loves you back, in whatever way it has to love" (103). That quote is explaining that when you really love something then it loves you back in whatever way it can. We made a stop at the gym. I led Gene into the locker room and I asked him what sport is he going to try out for this year. He said that he was not trying out for any sport and he is trying to become the assitant crew manager. I told Gene that there was no war, it was a conspiracy by all the adults. That probably surprised Gene because I was always talking about war and what was going on with the war. I also told Gene that I always wanted to become an Olympic athlete and now that I can not do that I told him that he would have to take my place. I began to train Gene and he began to help me in my classes we both made alot of progress. "Leave your fantasy out of this. We're grooming you for the Olympics, pal, in 1944" (109). That quote is explaining that I am training Gene for the Olympics. I was making Gene run and Mr. Ludsbury came out and I told him that Gene was training for the Olympics. He told me and Gene to do no athletic trainging prior to war and I told him no and he left with out another word. I told Gene that Mr. Ludsbury did not know that there was no real war going on, he must have believed the conspiracy.

Im not in chapter 7 so this is what I am doing at my house while I wait until im in the next chapter

I am not at Devon High School yet. I am going there in a few days. I have no clue what is going on there. This is very boring, all I am doing is eating food and reading. This is very boring. I can only imagine what is going on there. People are probably excited that I am coming back. A lot of people probably have asked Gene what exactly happened to me and when exactly I am coming back. They are probably all saying "Wow I can not believe that happened to Finny, I feel so bad for him." Truthfully I think that this deserved to happen to me for a reason. I am not sure what that reason is yet but I know that it happened for a reason. While I wait for the next few days to go by I am really excited because I want to see Gene again and become friends because as you remember we got in a fight. The last words I said to him were "Listen, pal, if I cant play sports, you're going to plat them for me" (77)! I was very mad at him and he was mad at me too.
Finally the days have come. I am on my way back to Devon and I can not wait. When I got to my room no one was there. So I unpacked and I waited. Finally a half in hour later Gene showed up. I said with a grin on my face "Hi pal, where's the brass band" (94)?

A New Year

The year started off a little strange because Gene came to my house and told me some stuff that I did not believe. I did not want to believe it but I was thinking while I was at my house until Thanksgiving that may be Gene was telling the truth and may be my feeling was right. I was also very bored while I was at my house. I had nothing to do. I was thinking all about school and how it changed and how every one was doing. I called Mr. Ludsbury and I told him that I really needed to talk to Gene, so he said that he would get him for me so I could talk to him. I wanted to know if he was still crazy about the idea of him possibly pushing me off the limb. "God you were crazy when you were here" (75). It is even ridiculous for me to say but truthfullyI think he might be telling the truth. Ah no he would never do thatI have to really stop thinking that way it is not right for me to say that because he would never do that to me. I can not believe that he would ever say that. I was really relieved when he said that he did not have another roommate because he is my best friend even if we got in that small little fight when he came to my house. "I didnt think you would. Roommates are roommates" (75). I asked Gene what sports he is going to try out for and he told me that he was not trying out for any sports. I went crazy, how could he not try out for any sports, he was getting so much better at them. Gene told me that he was trying to be assitant crew chief and the chew chief is a boy named Cliff Quackenbush. He told me that he was really mean. I told Gene that for my sake he has to play sports. I said to him "Listen, pal, if I cant play sports, you're going to play them for me" (76). Gene said that he would play sports. I was really happy and even more excited to come back to school now then ever before. Now me and Gene are really good friends again and we are not mad at each other.

Me

My fell was really bad. I ended up shattering my leg. No one was aloud to see me while I was in the infirmary for so long it was so boring there I had nothing to do. One mourning I was feeling alot better so I told Dr. Stanpole, my doctor, that people could come and see me. Dr. Stanpole told me that I was going to be able to walk agian and I was relieved but then he told me that I would never be able to run and play sports ever again. "Sports are finished for him, after an accident like that. Of course" (55). I asked to see Gene especailly because he is my best friend and I wanted to talk to him. Gene told me that he tries to grab me but I was alittle to far away from his grasp, he watched the shocked expression on my face as I fell. "I just remember looking at your face for a second. Awful..." (57). He aked me what I thought made me fall. I thought to myself and then said "I must have lost my balance. It must have been that..." (58). I did have this feeling that I did not lose my balance, that actually Gene had pushed me off. I did not tell him that and I apoligized for ever having a feeling like that. The next day Dr. Stanpole said I was not well enough to see anyone. The summer session ended and I went home to my house near Boston. Towards the end of the summer Gene suddenly showed up to my house instead of going straight to school. I asked him how his vacation was. He told me of a fire that had happened which sounded bad. He told he that he was thinking alot about me and the accident that had happened. he told me that he shook the branch and deliberitly made me fall. "I deliberately jounced the limb so you would fall off" (62). I did not believe him because why would my best friend do that to me, I would never do anything like that to him. I grew very furious with him, so I just told him that I would be coming back at Thanksgiving.

We woke up in the mourning and I went swimming. We got back just in time so Gene could take his trigonomotry test which he failed. That was the first test he ever failed. Gene was studying really hard and I simply told him that he was studying to hard. I think he is trying to become class validictorian but he denied it. Then Gene realized he did want to become class validictorian. He asked me how I would fell if he achieved that but i said I did not really care even though I kind of do because then i would beome the best at everything but that really does not matter to me. "If I was head of the class on Graduation Day and made a speech and won the Ne Plus Ultra Scholostic Achievement Citation, then we would both be on top, we would be even, that was all" (43). Gene started to study alot so I started to do alot of studying because I was bored because my best friend was just studying the whole time. Gene told Mr. Prud'homme the substitute teacher that we went to the beach, I could not believe he would do that. It does not matter though because we did not get into any trouble. Leper our friend, wants to jump off the tree to become part of our group. "Elwin "Leper" Lepellier would go down has announced his intention to make his leap this very night, to qualify, to save his face at last" (49). Leper is going to jump from the tree and be part of our group. Gene did not believe me but he came to see for hisself. I decided for me and Gene to do a double jump. we got up on the limb but suddenly something bad happened. "Finny, his balance was gone, swung his head around to look at me for an instant with extreme interest, and then he tumbled sideways, broke through the little branches below and hit the bank with a sickening, unnatural thud" (52). I was standing on the tree and then suddenly I lost my balance some how and I fell sideways really hard and I hit the bank with a loud thud. I was knocked out cold. I have no clue as to what happpened to that limb. I know that gene would never do that to me. so I think that the wind made the limb move and I was really careless and just fell. Luckily I did not die because i really hit the bank hard.

Super Suicide Society

I got six other boys to join me and Gene's club. I came up with some rules that will be fun to do. In the beggining of each meeting me and Gene have to jump out of the tree. I really do not like the athletic program there at Devon High so I came up with a new sport called blitzball. I wanted it to be named after something to do with the war. So Bobby Zane came up with the name blitzkrieg, so then I made it into blitzball. "Or just blitzball," reflected Finny. "Yes blitzball" (29). That is how I came up with the name. The rules are that your arms have to be behind your back and you have to try and tackle the person with the ball. If you have the ball then you can either run with it or you can pass it off to some one else. "No. You keep your arms crossed like this on your chest, and you just butt the ball carrier. No elbowing either..." (29). I am explaining the rules to everyone. Later that day Gene and I are swimming alone and I wanted to try and break a record for wimming. I wanted to try snd break the 100 yard free style that was set by A. Hopkins Parker. His time was 53 seconds. I ended up beating it by .7 second. "I had looked up at the watch; he had broken A. Hopkins Parker's record by .7 second" (35). I broke the record and I couldnt believe it. Gene wanted me to do it again in public with the officials and everone there but I said no. "No, I just wanted to see if I could do it. Now I know. But I dont want to do it in public" (35). I did not want any one to know because i did not want A. Hopkins Parker to lose his record when he deserved it more than I did because he practiced long and hard for that and I did not even practice one day for it. The record does not mean that much to me any ways. Later I asked Gene if he wanted to go to the beach and he said sure even though we were not suppose to go there. We ate dinner at a hot dog stand and we got beers because we had fake draft cards. we fell asleep on the beach.
